The Vaiamanu Motu offers a stunning turquoise lagoon, perfect for unwinding and letting your cares just drift away. Here, you can luxuriate in the simple joys of soaking up the warm sun and gentle sea breeze.

In the evening, your Tahitian Guesthouse promises a delightful dinner featuring local delicacies cooked over a wood fire: from taro root and ipo bread made with coconut milk to freshly grilled fish. A 360° view from mount Hiro

There are four villages on the island, divided into two parts by the ‘traversière‘ road that leads to Mount Hiro.

The hike to the summit, standing at 438m, takes approximately an hour along a fairly steep trail. However, the breathtaking 360° view overlooking one of French Polynesia’s most stunning lagoons makes the effort well worthwhile.

Not to be missed

A preserved island and floral garden

If you visit Raivavae in December, you’ll have the chance to taste the delicious lychees for which the Austral Islands are famous. The island itself is a stunning floral garden, showcasing a remarkable variety of colourful hibiscus shrubs. A unique feature of Raivavae is the sight of bunches of bananas suspended above the water. This traditional method, used to clean the bananas of parasites, also keeps them out of reach of hungry rodents and birds.

Where to stay in Raivavae?

Raivavae is not a mass tourism destination; it prides itself on authenticity and tranquillity. Instead of hotels, the island offers several charming Tahitian Guesthouses, located by the sea, in the heart of the village, or in the countryside. These accommodations typically include half-board (breakfast and dinner) in the price. Lunch is usually provided as part of your day’s excursion or boat trip.

Getting here and getting around

Raivavae Airport, inaugurated in 2002, is situated about a 10-minute drive from the main village. Since there is no shuttle service from the airport to the village, it’s important to arrange for your hosts to collect you when you make your reservation. They will be more than happy to come and get you, ensuring a warm and friendly welcome with a smiling “Ia oga na“, the Raivavae equivalent of “Ia ora na“.
