Discovered by Europeans in the 18th century, the Austral Islands lie 400 miles southwest of Tahiti. This archipelago comprises seven islands, with only five being inhabited. Air Tahiti offers flights to four of these islands. Known for their agricultural produce, the islands also harbour archaeological remains that testify to the rich and vibrant culture that thrived here in pre-European times.

Why visit the Austral Islands?

Whale watching

The warm climate of the Austral Islands draws humpback whales each year, who come to reproduce and nurture their young. From August to October, especially in the waters around Rurutu and Tubuai, you can witness these majestic creatures. Female whales perform a protective ballet with their calves while the males sing their captivating songs, creating a truly enchanting spectacle for those fortunate enough to observe it.

Little-known archaeological sites

The islands of Tubuai, Raivavae, and Rimatara are home to various pre-European sites, many of which are enveloped in lush vegetation. Despite their abandonment, some sites are well-preserved and certainly worth visiting. Local guides or your hosts can lead you to these historical sites, sharing the rich history and legends of the marae and other ancient locations.

Rugged beauty

In Tubuai and Raivavae, the lagoon’s turquoise waters are crystal clear, and the sandy beaches are startlingly white. The rugged cliffs of Rurutu, dotted with caves that hint at a mysterious past, stand proudly against the ocean. Ornithologists will find Rimatara a true delight. The smallest island in the archipelago is home to Kuhl’s Lorikeet, known locally as the vini ‘ura, a beautiful and precious little bird endangered and cherished by the local population.
