Three days in Ua Pou : discover our itineraries and tours

If you like fresh air and big open spaces, then Ua Pou is perfect for you. Getting there is something of adventure – you either take the cargo ferry, Aranui 5, which stops to deliver merchandise to other islands on the way; or you fly and enjoy a hair raising landing on the sloping airstrip!

Day 1

Hiking

Ua Pou is an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts. There are countless trails into the hills and valleys, so contact a local guide and head for the hills. (We always recommend that you go hiking with a guide in the Marquesas Islands.) One of the best trails, although not suitable for children, is to Poumaka. It takes four hours and leads into the realm of Marquesan legends. You set off from Hakahetau and you’ll pass the famous pitons of which the island is very proud,. They are so tall that their summits are sometimes lost in the clouds, and your guide will tell you some of the legends that concern them.

Day 2

Hohoi

Hohoi is famed for its flower stones and is well worth the visit. You can take a full or half day excursion there, and on the way you’ll visit archeological sites and meet some of the craftspeople in the different valleys. One of the visits will be to tohua Mauia, a site where religious and festive ceremonies were once held. Some of the stones are engraved with petroglyphs. When you finally get to Hohoi beach, see if you can find a flower stone. But don’t get your hopes up, it’s like trying to find a four leaf clover!

Day 3

Arts and crafts

On your final day, take a stroll around the main village of Hakahau. Visit the agriculture, craftwork and cultural center. It’s divided into four sections: craftwork, culture, agriculture and a museum and library section. The island’s craftsmen and women display their creations and will be delighted to explain their art. You can have lunch at the center during the week, and there’s an internet connection, which is perfect for passing yachtsmen and women.
