History:
At the age of just twenty-three, Herman MELVILLE began a five-year voyage to the South Pacific as a seaman aboard the whaler Acushnet. On July 9, 1842, he finally arrived in the Marquesas Islands, after eighteen months at sea in harshly disciplined conditions.
In the archipelago, he spent four weeks living among the indigenous Taipi tribe, before escaping on board an Australian whaler, the Lucy Ann. On September 20, 1842, following a mutiny on board in which he had taken part, Melville was landed in Tahiti and arrested. Tried and convicted, he was nevertheless hired as a harpooner on the Charles & Henry, about to leave Papeete.
